Solar storage
Solar battery cost: how to judge whether storage is worth adding
A solar battery can increase the amount of solar electricity used in the home, but it also adds cost. The right question is not whether a battery is useful. The right question is whether the extra savings and backup value justify the extra installed price.
What solar battery cost includes
Battery cost is more than the battery module. A complete installation may include a battery inverter or hybrid inverter, gateway, electrical protection, cabling, monitoring, labour, configuration, permits and sometimes backup circuits. If the battery is added later, extra labour and electrical modifications may be required. This is why a battery quote should be treated as a system price, not only a price per kWh of storage.
Capacity and usable capacity
Battery capacity is usually described in kilowatt-hours. Usable capacity is the portion that can actually be charged and discharged in normal operation. A 10 kWh battery may not provide the full 10 kWh every day because the system protects battery life, loses some energy through conversion and may reserve energy for backup. When comparing products, check usable capacity, continuous power, peak power, warranty length and throughput limits.
How batteries affect savings
Without a battery, daytime solar that is not used immediately is exported. With a battery, some of that surplus can be stored for evening use. The financial value comes from replacing imported electricity later. The battery is most valuable when the import price is much higher than the export tariff and when the home has enough evening use to discharge the battery regularly.
Example battery comparison
Assume a solar-only system exports 2,000 kWh per year at 0.08 per kWh. If a battery lets the home use 1,200 kWh of that energy instead of exporting it, and the import electricity price is 0.28 per kWh, the gross additional value is 1,200 times the difference between 0.28 and 0.08, or 240 per year before battery losses. If the installed battery add-on costs 5,000, the simple payback on the battery alone is long unless backup value, time-of-use rates or higher tariff spreads improve the result.
Solar-only first, battery second
A practical method is to estimate the solar-only system first. Then increase self-consumption in a second scenario and add the battery cost. This separates the value created by the panels from the value created by storage. It also avoids making the entire solar project look worse simply because the optional battery has a longer payback.

Battery sizing is a usage problem, not only a capacity problem
A battery should be sized around the surplus solar available to charge it and the electricity demand that occurs after solar production falls. An oversized battery may spend much of the year partially charged, while an undersized battery may fill early and export the remaining solar. Looking at hourly or half-hourly consumption data, where available, is more informative than choosing storage capacity from annual consumption alone.
Usable capacity, continuous power and backup behaviour are separate specifications. A battery can have enough energy capacity to run evening loads but still have a power limit that prevents it from supporting several large appliances at once. Backup capability may also require additional gateway hardware or a dedicated protected-load circuit.
Questions to ask about a battery quote
- What is the usable capacity rather than the nominal capacity?
- What continuous and peak power can the system deliver?
- What round-trip efficiency assumption is used in the savings estimate?
- What does the warranty limit: years, retained capacity, cycles or energy throughput?
- Does the quoted system provide backup during a grid outage, and if so, for which circuits?
For financial comparison, run a solar-only scenario first. Then add the battery price and a realistic increase in self-consumption. The difference in annual benefit is the value created by storage, which can be compared directly with the additional battery cost.
